Used it many times - with MPEG Streamclip and QT. No, these files are just "mpeg", whatever that means. If QuickTime Player can open the files but just can't play them, try using the Show Movie Inspector command (command-I). It may tell you in better detail what format the audio & video are in.

As for the Video card drivers, why should Quicktime play OK? What is the common denominator for the WMP and Realplayer that cause them not to show any movie files.
